Throwback: March 28, 2013

An Egg Challenge

Before spring break Mrs. Christy Whewell’s 3rd graders worked in groups to design crush-proof      containers to protect eggs. The moment of truth came  when their finished projects were put to the test on the playground.  Shown above are the pupils & their teacher
verifying the strength of the individual egg bundles
 from atop a playground slide.
Guess what?
Three of the four teams built containers
that  protected the contents so well that
the  eggshells were not smashed in the fall!

#10MOOREMinutes

It started out as a cool March afternoon
but one with purpose, for us all.
Together we walked from Parkside, heading  down to our Ed Loeb Track and Field to honor some high school runners.  We were remembering pupils who had recently been injured or had lost their lives during a routine practice, held right after the school day ended.
The athletes we were remembering
attended Moore High School, in Oklahoma.
Runners Rachel Freeman,
Yuridia Martinez, and Kolby Crum
had been asked by their coach to do a 10
minute run along with their teammates.  Shortly after beginning, they were unexpectedly
hit and killed by a drunk driver.
We watched as three white balloons were launched in their memory.  Blue balloons were sent skyward for runners who were injured in the accident, as well as red balloons to show support for the Moore Lion High School Cross Country Team and their families.
We all shared a moment of silence.
When you "Sharpen the Saw," you strengthen
your mind, your body, and your heart.
You also strengthen your spirit.
We send our messages of love to
Moore High School not just today,
but for all the days that lie ahead.
We know that "hope" springs eternal.
Thank you to Mrs. Sonia Gray for
helping us honor some special
students and families.

Keep It Up...Bravo!

We asked, "Do you need help?"
"Oh no but thanks," they replied.
Yes these fifth graders had quite a load.
"Are you headed to Mrs. Lyles' room?"
"Yes!"
We asked if they knew her nickname.
They nodded, "The Recycle Queen,"
and turned to head down the hallway.

Sunday Smile

It's a fun, annual affair.
"Science Night," with Mrs. Gray's pupils.
Many volunteers help her unveil the
ideas, inspiration, and curiosity present
when the goal is nurturing our youngsters.
Lots of "problem solving" all evening.
There were many different activities available for 2nd graders and families to explore.
Who doesn't love a challenge?
Can you identify the different parts of plants?
Can you build a sturdy boat?
Can you use data to answer questions?
The start of a construction project...
Just how high can you build your tower?
How keen are your powers of observation?
Scientists plan but they also rework their
plans to verify their ideas and goals.
Learning is truly a family affair.
In this corner of the room
was something we're quite excited about.
The era of Acellus has arrived!
Our thanks to everyone who helped
make "Science Night" such a fun
learning experience.
Keep asking questions, searching for
answers, and discovering what our
world has to offer you!
After all, exploration is exciting!

Be the "I" in KIND

Taking the time to teach a
fellow student how to play a game he's
interested in joining, without
being impatient with all
his questions?

Thank you...carry on!

Meet Our Grand 1st Graders

We have some very special students
who've captured the hearts of their teachers.
Earnest, hard working, and kind.
Creative and talented in so many ways!
Bright youth who set learning goals for
themselves and go right ahead to reach them.
Our pride is showing and
we're thankful for all these boys and girls.
Can you blame us?

Welcoming "Dudes!"

You know, third graders are a curious bunch.
Recently they've been studying dinosaurs.
They found out what dinosaurs ate.
These pupils learned more about
the habits of these ancient creatures.
Next, the pupils wrote reports.
Their reports went into individual slide shows.
The rest as we say, is history!
Invitations went out to "dudes."
You know:  dads, step parents,
grandpas uncles, or other special men
in the lives of Mr. Holtz's third graders.
Refreshments for the slide shows?
You guessed it.....doughnuts of course.
Pupils eagerly awaited responses
from the many invitations they sent out!
Luckily many "dudes" were
able to join the children at Parkside.
Our Community Room was filled with folks.
We feel our students and their
"dudes"
are a very special bunch!
No program is complete
without decorations, right?
Our thanks to everyone who was able
to join the youngsters and be part
of their special event
